Random round-up: wrestling, gymnastics, tennis

January 22, 2010

Now, I’m not much of a wrestling fan; in fact, I have no clue how the scoring works. But it doesn’t take much to understand headlines like these:

CMU wrestling routs Eastern by 31 points
No. 7 Chippewas Win at Eastern Michigan, 34-3

No surprise there, given that Central came into this match having not lost to Eastern since 1991. Next up for the wrestling team, if I’m reading their schedule correctly, is a triple-header at Bowen Field House this Saturday: Indianapolis at 1 pm, Thiel at 3 pm, and Olivet College at 5 pm.

The gymnastics team is set to open their season tonight at Kent State. The meet will be streamed live on Kentstatesports.com. The Eagle gymnasts finished last season at 6-10 (3-3 MAC), and placed fifth in the MAC Championship.

The women’s tennis team takes to the road this weekend, travelling to Purdue this afternoon and Iowa on Sunday. Over the past four seasons, EMU tennis has gone 0-9 against Big Ten competition, but this is a whole new team; five of seven team members are freshmen.
