Weekend round-up

May 23, 2010

If you’re wondering why there hasn’t been much here the past week, it’s because there hasn’t been much news in the sports I care most about (football and basketball). Football’s spring workouts ended with the Green and White scrimmage a while back, and the basketball late recruiting period is over, so there probably won’t be much for a while. That said, here’s a round-up of goings-on in other sports.

The men’s golf team finished seventh in the NCAA West Regional, two spots short of the team cut, which takes the top five teams. The Eagles’ top golfer, senior Cam Burke, finished five  spots out of the individual cut, which takes the best individual golfer not on an advancing team. Despite coming up short, this was still an improvement over recent seasons: in 2007 they finished 15th in regional play, and in 2008 they finished 14th in regional play. Congratulations to the men’s golf team on a good season!

The baseball team after pounding Oakland University 17-1, dropped their final six regular season matches, being swept at home by Toledo and on the road at Central Michigan, who won the MAC. For those six games, they never managed to score more than three runs, and never held their opponents under five runs, so they’ve got some work to do. They finish the regular season 25-30 (13-14 in MAC play) which is good enough for a MAC tournament matchup against MAC East champion Kent State at 4 pm this Wednesday in Chillicothe, OH.

In brighter news,  the men’s track and field team won the MAC championship, their first in 21 years, taking gold in seven events (out of thirteen). Women’s track and field also earned gold medals in two events.
