Former EMU Eagles making news
Former interim EMU football head coach Bob LaPointe has announced his retirement from Belleville High School. LaPointe took over when Mike Stock was fired after the team lost the first three games of 1982, including a 49-12 pasting at Louisiana Tech and 35-0 shutout at Miami University (OH), bringing the school-record losing streak to 22 games. Although he lost his first five games, two of them were only by a single point each, and he did finally end the losing streak with a 9-7 win over Kent State. LaPointe’s head coaching career at EMU was not extended past the single season, however, as Jim Harkema was brought in the following year. Since that time, LaPointe has been a successful high school coach, working at Divine Child in Dearborn, Notre Dame Preperatory in Pontiac, and nearly 20 years at Belleville. He won several state championships during his career, and while at Belleville High School he coached eventual NFL players Kris Jenkins, Cullen Jenkins, and Ian Gold.
