Falling out of the top-25: Florida State, Virginia Tech.

Newcomers: South Carolina, Utah.

Notes since last week:

  • Virginia Tech lost a close one to Boise State. I always figured Boise State to win that one (I’ve got them ranked #1, after all!) so I only dropped the Hokies one spot for the loss. Then Virginia Tech lost to FCS powerhouse James Madison University. I don’t care how good a team is in FCS play, a top FBS team should be able to beat them every time. Ergo, Virginia Tech is not a top FBS team; I dropped them out of my rankings for that loss.
  • Penn State lost at Alabama, which was to be expected. What was not to be expected was the way they got hammered by a Crimson Tide team missing Heisman-winner Mark Ingram. I dropped them a few spots for that.
  • Georgia Tech lost a close game at Kansas, and dropped, because I don’t think Kansas is that good. A top team should be able to win on the road, especially against lesser competition.
  • Florida State got demolished by Oklahoma, for which I dropped them out of my rankings.
  • Auburn won an SEC road game and moved up. That’s how it works.
  • South Carolina won at home against Georgia and made it into the rankings.
