Blog name

September 23, 2010

OK, after several months of blogging without a name, I’ve finally chosen one: “Eagle Totem”.

I chose this name because I feel it ties in to the eagle mascot that EMU has used since 1991, as well as the native American mascot (Hurons) from 1929 through 1990. Although the Hurons, who called themselves the Wendat, did not, as far as I can tell, originally carve huge totem poles in the fashion of the peoples of the Pacific Northwest, they did apparently have the concept of the totem, and at least since the start of the twentieth century, did take up the practice of carving totem poles.

For your viewing enjoyment, here are some samples of totem poles that, as far as I can tell, were made by the Hurons and their descendants. Click any of the images to see the source websites, at which larger versions are available.

Making good on my promise, I will say that this name was my idea, not the suggestion of someone else. I haven’t decided who will get it, but if this blog ever becomes a profit-making endeavor, the first month’s profit will go to someone at EMU.
