Former Eagle Leonard Drake dies
Former EMU women’s basketball assistant coach Leonard Drake died Wednesday night, at the age of 56. According to reports, the cause of death has not yet been determined, although Drake was known to suffer from health problems and he had been recently hospitalized.
An alumnus of Central Michigan University, Drake was the Chippewas’ men’s basketball team MVP in 1976, and was team captain and Central Michigan’s “Athlete of the Year” in 1977. Among other highlights of his career, he was the head coach of the Central Michigan men’s basketball team from 1993-97, and head coach of the Lamar University women’s basketball team from 2002-07. Health problems forced his resignation from Lamar in February 2007, and later that year he joined EMU as an assistant coach. He stayed at EMU three years, leaving just this summer to become the athletic director at Central High School in Evansville, Indiana. (It was for his position that EMU prematurely announced the hiring of Anthony Smith a few weeks ago.)
Our thoughts go out to his family, including his wife, Rhonda, and his children, Jared and Enjoli.
