MSNC athlete James Martin dies

September 30, 2010

I missed noting it this morning, but in addition to Leonard Drake, another notable former EMU athlete died yesterday.

James Martin, who earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at Michigan State Normal College, died in Mount Pleasant yesterday, following a long illness. Martin coached high school football, basketball, baseball, and swimming for 18 years at Kinde, Flat Rock and Riverview High Schools, before serving 15 years as principal of Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti Township. Martin was the chairman of the EMU Football Bust in 1970-71, was the president of the E-Letterwinners Club in 1976 as a charter member of the organization, was inducted into the EMU Hall of Fame in 1981, and also served on the EMU Alumni Board of Directors from 1983-84.

His younger son, John Martin, was a standout baseball player at EMU from 1975-78 and was inducted into the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year.
