Soccer’s “second season” starts now
With a 3-0 loss to Central Michigan on Thursday, EMU’s soccer team concluded their regular season. With a 9-7-4 overall record, 6-2-3 in the MAC, the Eagles finished in third place in both the West Division and the MAC overall, but because the top two seeds go to the two division winners, EMU will be the #4 seed in the tournament. That means that at 1 pm this afternoon the Eagles will host the #5 seed Western Michigan Broncos at Scicluna Field.
EMU leads the overall series with the Broncos but it’s been close (8-7-3 all-time), as exemplified by the last two matchups. On October 16, 2009, both teams were scoreless at the end of two overtime periods in Kalamazoo. Two weeks ago, at the Eagles’ Senior Day, EMU struck first, taking a 1-0 lead 15 minutes in, but Western Michigan evened it up in the 61st minute, and no one scored through the rest of regulation or two overtimes.
This should be another good, close-fought game between the in-state rivals, though since it’s an elimiation tournament, somebody must win. The winner of this game will advance to a semifinal game Friday, either at Toledo or hosting Ohio.
