MBB: Canisius 71, EMU 51 recap
There’s really not much to say about this game.
In the preview, I said this:
The betting lines for this game favor the Golden Griffins by 3 to 6 points. Overall it should be a reasonably close game, which should give us a decent barometer on how this season will go for EMU. Both teams finished last season close to .500, and each team has had one game against tough competition and one game against relatively weak competition. Each team also lost its leading scorer and floor captain from last year. If EMU is going to have a successful season, this is a game they need to find a way to win.
I stand by what I wrote.
The loss in and of itself is worrisome, but the manner in which EMU lost — outplayed in just about every facet of the game — suggests that, not only will the team not achieve the 20+ wins that I think should be needed for Charles Ramsey to keep his job, not only will the team not achieve 15 wins to finish over .500, but the team may not even manage to reach double-digit wins. If that’s the case — if this basketball team turns out to be as bad as they are promising to be — EMU will have no excuse for keeping Ramsey around another season. At this point in his tenure, in his sixth year, the team should have progressed much farther than this. Unlike football, it doesn’t usually take half a decade to turn around a basketball team.
