Busy weekend open thread

January 8, 2011

There are a whole bunch of EMU teams in competition this weekend, and since we haven’t had one in a while, here’s an open thread for it.

  • The wrestling team is in East Lansing for the Spartan Duals, taking on Mott Community College at 11 am, Lock Haven at 1 pm, and Michigan State at 3 pm.
  • Men’s and women’s track host the EMU Invitational at Bowen Field House.
  • Men’s and women’s swimming and diving head to Rochester, Michigan, to swim against Oakland University at 2 pm.
  • Men’s basketball travels to Toledo to open MAC play. In an unmistakable sign of just how bad MAC men’s basketball is this year, MAC Report Online is picking the Eagles to finish fourth in the West Division, despite being 0-10 against Division I teams. The game is at 7 pm, and can be heard on WEMU and WEMU online.
  • In the Official Eagle Totem Game of the Weekend (yes, it’s today, not Thursday), the women’s basketball team hosts Ball State (5-9; 0-1 MAC) at 2 pm. The game will be on Eagle All-Access, or you could always just go to the game.

Use this as your open thread for the weekend to talk about any of the matches, whether Mike Marrow is going to stick around at EMU, or anything else on your mind.

I wonder if you could comment on my idea I have regarding EMU basketball. One of the problems facing Charles Ramsey and his basketball team is that they play in a mausoleum. I remember the good old days at Bowen Fieldhouse when the old barn would rock with excitement. I watched Ben Braun’s teams take down Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Washington State at a Bowen and the place was electric. The fact that it was right smack in the middle of campus made it for students to go to games. It was a fun place. The Convo is a sterile, out of the way convention/events center. Yes it is great for graduations and job fairs but sucks for basketball games. I say we play at least 10 games a year (I would love all home games to be in Bowen) and instead of having 650 in attendance at the Convo, I’d almost guarantee you we’d have at least 4,000 in Bowen for each game. When do we finally cut our losses? The Convo is not working, it is just to damn far from campus.

In the early- to mid-1990s, EMU adminstration moved in a very generic direction, replacing “Hurons” with “Eagles”, replacing “Bowen Field House” with the “Convocation Center”, etc. Today I see an administration that recognizes the value of history and of quirky uniqueness. I don’t think there’s any hope of abandoning the Convo for basketball, but I can certainly imagine them holding a few — let’s call it a handful — of games in Bowen.

FYI, in the last regular season game at Bowen, which was also his last, Earl Boykins scored 30 points and hit a 36-foot shot at the buzzer to beat Toleldo 87-86. (EMU hosted Toledo again three days later in the first round of the MAC Tourney and trounced them, 98-79, en route to a MAC title.) I know it’s not going to happen at this late stage, but how cool would it be for the Earl Boykins jersey retirement game to be at the Field House?!

I was at the last regular season game at Bowen. I brought my brother Dave, who is an MSU grad. He was amazed at the environment. Boykins was unbelievable. So was Derrick Dial! I predicted that night that both Boykins and Dial would be in the NBA. I am right with you on the Earl Boykins jersey retirement game. It would have been so cool to have it in a packed Bowen Fieldhouse! I have so many great memories there. I don’t know if they’ve honored the Sweet 16 team yet with Lorenzo Neely, Marcus Kennedy, the Thomas twins, Kory Hallas, Ben Braun, etc, but that would be a GREAT Bowen Fieldhouse opportunity.
