MAC softball tournament

May 11, 2011

Who would have imagined, when EMU’s softball team won their first MAC tournament title in 2007, that it would take them four years just to get back into the tournament?

We don’t talk much about bat and ball sports here, but EMU’s softball team has quietly put together a solid season, finishing fifth in the MAC regular season. In just a few minutes, they’ll make their first MAC tournament appearance in four years, in what should be a fairly evenly matched game against the Ball State Cardinals, who scored the tournament’s #4 seed by finishing 1/2 game ahead of the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the EMU baseball team is having a good year also. The Eagles are very much in contention for a regular season title, just one game off the West Division lead with two weeks remaining. In non-conference play, they’ve won series against Kansas (2-1), Michigan (2-1), and Big (12) Ten leaders Michigan State (1-0). Prior to a 3-4 loss to Northern Illinois last Friday, the team held the nation’s longest active winning streak (tied with Dartmouth). They’ve had a player named MAC Player/Pitcher of the Week six times so far. On top of all that, we’ve seen Zack Leonard become EMU’s all-time hit leader.

All in all, it’s been a great season for EMU’s bat and ball teams, and hopefully both teams will see their seasons extended for a while yet!

I was at the games on Friday and Sunday. Sadly they lost both but didn’t look too shabby doing so. Took pictures of course. At the game Friday, I think I saw the President and the new basketball coach.
