EMU men’s basketball schedule released

August 24, 2011

EMU announced the full men’s basketball schedule today. Since we already covered the MAC schedule when the conference announced it, today we’ll look exclusively at the non-conference portion.

11/11 Illinois-Chicago (Horizon League)
11/15 @ Texas Southern (Southwestern Athletic Conference)
11/18 Arkansas-Little Rock (Sun Belt)
11/20 @ IUPUI (The Summit League)
11/23 Rochester College (NAIA Independent)
11/27 Michigan State (Big Ten)
11/29 @ Syracuse (Big East)
12/1 @ Colgate (Patriot League)
12/8 @ Drake (Missouri Valley Conference)
12/10 @ Purdue (Big Ten)
12/20 @ Radford (Big South)
12/22 @ Virginia Tech (ACC)
12/29 Cable Car Classic: Santa Clara (West Coast Conference)
12/30  Cable Car Classic: Wagner (Northeast Conference) or Air Force (Mountain West Conference)

2/18 ESPN BracketBuster: @ TBA opponent

For convenience, I’ve given the conference affiliation for each opponent. As with the MAC schedule, we’ll look at this in more detail as the basketball season approaches, but for now, here are a few quick thoughts:

  •  The opponents this year are noticeably higher quality teams than last year. The only non-Division I opponent is Rochester College, while last season the Eagles played Rochester, Madonna (NAIA), and Ferris State (NCAA Division II). Last season the only major program EMU played was at Michigan State, while this season the Eagles will host the Spartans and travel to play Syracuse, Purdue, and Virginia Tech.
  • EMU is going to spend a lot of time on the road this fall. The Eagles will only play four non-conference home games, and between hosting Michigan State on November 27 and Central Michigan January 11, EMU will have a 9-game road trip. Yikes!
  • The closest things to holiday games will be games against Rochester College 7 PM the night before Thanksgiving and in Santa Clara against either Wagner or Air Force on December 30. I’ve never been a fan of games on holidays, and I’m glad not to see any.

Overall, this will be a really tough non-conference schedule for Rob Murphy’s first season. By the time this team gets to MAC play, they will be thoroughly tested, and will either be a force to be reckoned with, or they’ll just be a wreck.

    Dear cmadler,
Are away basketball games, against big time opponents, money makers? Eastern playing Michigan and Pennsylvania State, for example, in football this year should garner them approximately a million in revenue. Playing Virginia Tech and Purdue, away…. how much can Eastern realize in revenue, if anything?

The quick answer is that Division I guarantee games at AQ-conference schools are usually $45,000 to $80,000, infrequently going as low as $20,000 or as high as $120,000. I don’t have specific numbers for any games, but Syracuse, Purdue, and Virginia Tech are probably right in that core range. In 2006, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, “We don’t go higher than $40,000 to $60,000 for a guarantee”. I’d be stunned if EMU’s total take from basketball for the season matched the $465,000 U-M is paying for the football game this year.
