EMU at Penn State open thread

September 24, 2011

It looks like a foggy, damp morning in Happy Valley. The fog should burn off by game time, leaving us a mostly cloudy afternoon with game temperatures in the mid- to upper-60s. There is a 30% chance of rain throughout the game, and yes, for anyone who’s wondering, the field at Beaver Stadium is natural grass, specifically, Kentucky Blue Grass. I’d expect the surface to be pretty-nearly perfect, however, since Penn State has one of the nation’s leading turf grass programs.

If you’re not at the game this afternoon, there are several other ways to keep up to date.

  • This game is actually really going to be honest-to-God televised. On ESPN2. Really.
  • It looks like it will be streamed live on Penn State All-Access. The cheapest way in is $9.95 for a one-month pass. Since it’s being broadcast on ESPN2, live streaming video will also be available on WatchESPN.
  • Listen to the game on WEMU, 89.1 FM. Or, if you’re out of the area, listen online for free.
  • Get game updates through Twitter by following @EMUFB11 and @eagletotemblog.
  • If you hunt around online, you’ll find several websites claiming to have free streaming video of the game. I’m dubious, and some of the sites seem sketchy, so I won’t link them here, but they shouldn’t be too hard to find if you look. But really, with all the other ways to watch this game, why would you bother?

You could also talk about it in the comments here. And if you can’t wait until noon to talk about football, feel free to get a head start this morning. It’s an open thread, so comments on any topic are legit.

I am a new fan to EMU (son plays there now) and l love direction of the team and looking forward to these next few years. I am a little disappointed in the lack of football talk on the emu station. I think people like myself are interested in hearing about the football team. Something need to get done about this. Even if it is for 3 hours per week. How disappointing,

A quick shout out to other things going on around Ypsi today for before/after your game watching!
    – Late this morning, the EMU Marching Band will be passing through College Heights, Normal Park, and then heading down Forest Ave to Depot Town, holding their annual March-A-Thon fundraiser. They’re currently raising money to replace their uniforms, which are in their 17th year of use. The total goal is $200,000, toward which they have raised about $60,000 so far. I am sure they the band will appreciate all donations, large and small; if you’re in Ypsi today, please thank them when they come by. The marching band is there to support the football team at every home game plus selected road games, but today, they need your support! Or, if you miss the March-A-Thon, they have an online pledge form you can print and mail in.
    – The Ugly Mug, at the corner of West Cross and North Hamilton, is celebrating their seventh anniversary with a “birthday” party from 5-9 tonight. Barbecue, potluck, live music, an art show, Ugly Mug memorabilia, and more!

I’m seeing Penn State favored by 28-29 points, which I think is way too much for this game. Both offenses have been struggling lately, and EMU’s defense seems to be improved. I think this is likely to be a low-scoring game, and I’d be a little surprised and disappointed if the Nittany Lions win by more than about 17.

At halftime, EMU trails 17-0. Depending on how you feel, 5-10 of that is on EMU’s offense, specifically, Alex Gillett, who fumbled the ball twice and overthrew a pass for an interception. The defense has come up big on several plays, none bigger than Cudworth punching the ball loose from Zordich on the goal line for a touchback instead of a touchdown.

I will say that I’m glad to see EMU passing more, though.

Nice pic by Ohrman to get something started in the 4th quarter!

The defense kept trying to get something started, but the offense was having none of it.
