Pan-American Games open thread

October 21, 2011

Since EMU has two athletes in the Pan-American Games, I thought an open thread would be appropriate today.

Former EMU pitcher Matt Shoemaker, now a minor-leaguer in the LA Angels’ organization, is on the roster for the USA baseball team. Yesterday Team USA opened play by crushing the Dominican Republic 20-2 in a game that was called in the eighth inning under the international 10-run mercy rule. They continue play with an 11 AM game today against Panama, and conclude the first round Saturday night at 8 PM against Mexico. Roster information is limited, so there’s no telling if or when Shoemaker will actually get to play.

Current EMU senior Tavelyn James is on the roster for the USA women’s basketball team, and as we’ve mentioned before, she is the first current MAC athlete in any sport to play in the Pan-American Games. They start play this afternoon at 2 PM against Argentina, then face Puerto Rico at 6:30 PM Saturday, and finish the first round with a 9 PM Sunday match against Mexico. Again, I can find no information about expected starters, or the rotation, so I don’t know whether or how much James will play.

The Pan-American Games, or some parts of them, are being shown on ESPN3. Unfortunately, they don’t indicate what sport or teams are being shown (perhaps it’s just general coverage). In any event, use this as an open thread to discuss the Games, Shoemaker, James, or anything else you feel like talking about today!

Pan-American Games results from 10/21: Baseball beat Panama 11-0 in a mercy-ruled 7 innnings. Mercy rules are for Little League, not international competitions. Shoemaker came on in relief and struck out two Panamanians to close out the 7th inning and the game. In women’s basketball, Argentina upset the defending champion USA team, 58-55. Stats do not yet exist on teh interwebs.

Quote from James: “We did not start the Pan Am games as we would have liked as we suffered a loss today against Argentina.. We have to play our game and not let anything distract us. It was a different atmosphere for most of us and the crowd was hectic. When we were winning they were for us, but once we got down they were against us. I was proud to be a starter for the US Pan Am team and to wear the American flag on my jersey. Thanks for following me!”

James started the game and played 28 minutes, shooting just 2-14 (14%), 0-4 in 3-point attempts, and hitting 2-2 free throws. She also had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Her 6 points made her the #3 scorer for the US.

Let there be a box score.
