Random Musings

December 7, 2011

I wanted to chime in about the past football season as well, Carter’s post-mortem was pretty thorough, but there is one thought I couldn’t help get out of my mind: What if we went 8-4 this year and were headed to a bowl?  I can’t help but wonder if we’d be reading reports of Ron English being the next coach at Arizona State.  Are we better off at 6-6 with Coach English, gearing up for a MAC title next year, or will a winning season and the Idaho Potato Bowl suffice?  Not that such an outcome wouldn’t make me happy, but I want to go to Ford Field and see Eastern in a MAC title game…

As for basketball, so far I’m impressed with Rob Murphy.  He’s a cool customer, very businesslike.  I especially like his in-game demeanor.  Unflappable is the word that comes to mind.  It is a nice change from listening to Charles Ramsey yelling at Will Cooper all game long…

Sigh.  We couldn’t even fill half the seats in the Convo for the MSU game?  I understand that the noon start and Thanksgiving weekend scheduling were not ideal, but it was disheartening to say the least.  It makes you wonder if we will ever have respectable attendance, whether or not we start winning.  Ditto for football.  Eagle Totem readers aside, EMU has one hell of an apathetic fan base…

Speaking of the MSU game, Tom Izzo deserves our thanks for bringing the Spartans to Ypsi.  He didn’t have to do that.  He’s a Hall of Fame coach, and a class act…

Also, it may shock the reader to know that Eastern Michigan has a player on its team that could play in the Big Ten!  Not start, mind you, but Jamell Harris could be a 10-12 minute defensive stopper off the bench for a BCS school.  If only he could develop some kind of offensive game, he’d be a huge difference maker for the Eagles…

Next four games for our intrepid Eagles are Drake, Purdue, Virginia Tech, and Radford.  Setting aside Purdue and Va Tech, the hope is that we can break even on this trip.  It won’t be easy…

Part of the reason it won’t be easy is the game at Drake.  Sometime in the last decade, the Missouri Valley Conference has surpassed the MAC.  In the 90’s, Ball State, EMU, Miami, and Kent all made visits to the Sweet Sixteen.  Since then the MAC has been (for the most part) a one and done conference.  Meanwhile, the MVC has produced recent Cinderella darlings like Northern Iowa, Bradley, Southern Illinois, and NIT Champ Wichita State.  Creighton is currently ranked.  The MVC continually packs 10,000 seat arenas, something the MAC cannot duplicate.  I’m not sure how we can get back ahead of the MVC, but the MAC’s days as a top tier Mid-Major basketball conference appear over, at least for now…

On a final note, the EMU Women’s basketball team hosts Michigan at the Convo this Sunday.  I don’t expect it to be well attended, but the ladies are playing some damn fine basketball and deserve our support.  Eagle Totem will be there…

    Dear Friends,
Attendance at the big sports, football and basketball, have been lagging for years, and it is mostly because of losing programs. Was the Michigan State basketball game televised? I can’t remember. If it was, that is going to hold back a number of fans because they get to see the game, get replays, get some analysis, and are in the comfort of their own home.
Winning will bring back the fans, but I am beginning to wonder if it was now a mistake to locate the athletic facilities so far from the rest of the campus? When I attended Eastern, Briggs Field was right across the street from McKenny Hall. The point being, students could easily walk to the stadium, and the same for Bowen Field House.

The men’s basketball game against Michigan State was on ESPNU.

Michigan’s Sport Venues are about the same distance from the main campus as Rynearson and their games seem to be well attended. I think the reason that EMU games are not well attended is because of the fact that EMU hasn’t had a winning season in a long time. But I think they need to put a couple winning seasons together to get their attendance up.

As for the MSU game, even though I was by the Student Section for the whole game, it sounded like a pro-Spartan crowd.
