MAC championship game open thread
And here we are, right where we hoped the team would be. Playing in the MAC championship game, and favored to win.
Although EMU has had a fairly good women’s basketball team for most of the past decade, this is not a familiar place for them. In the 30 years that the MAC has had a women’s basketball tournament, the Eagles have only played in the title game twice, defeating Bowling Green in 2004 and losing to the Falcons last year.
EMU looked set to face Bowling Green again this year, but the Chippewas managed to do what no other team in the past six years could accomplish: keeping the Falcons out of the championship game. This sets up the first-ever tournament meeting between EMU and Central Michigan. In the overall series, the Chippewas lead 38-31, but EMU has won 18 of the last 24 games. This year, each team won their home game. The regular-season-ending loss in Mount Pleasant was especially costly for the Eagles, since a win would have given them a share of the MAC regular-season championship, an outright West Division title. It seems fitting that EMU’s chance to play in the NCAA tournament comes against the very team that cost them any hope of an at-large bid.
