MAC Championship open thread!
The hero of yesterday’s game is certainly Paige Redditt, who, with an assist from Natachia Watkins, scored the game-winning basket with 1.5 seconds remaining. Watkins was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Eagles, with 25 points (shooting 11-16) and 7 rebounds, while Redditt added 18 points and 6 rebounds. Tavelyn James had a disappointing 23-point game: disappointing because she made just 5 of 10 two-point attempts and 1 of 9 threes. She did make 10 of her 12 free throws, but with better shooting she could have easily had a 30-point game.
ESPN’s Bracketology has the Eagles projected as a 13 seed, playing the opening weekend in Bowling Green, Ohio, with a first-round game against #21 Georgia (22-8, 11-5 SEC) and a potential second-round matchup with either #18 Georgetown (22-8, 11-5 Big East) or Florida Gulf Coast (29-2, 18-0 Atlantic Sun). Obviously whoever they face, as a double-digit seed EMU will be a heavy underdog, but if — IF — all the Eagles bring their A-game, I think they have the potential to pull off an upset or two.
EMU will learn their destination and first-round opponent when the NCAA women’s tournament selection show airs Monday night at 7 PM. The show will be broadcast on ESPN and online at Watch ESPN, and the team is encouraging fans to gather at 6 PM at Buffalo Wild Wings in Ypsilanti (216 James L. Hart Parkway) to watch the show together.
In the meantime, take this as an open thread to discuss your favorite moments from this season, your thoughts about the MAC tournament (including the new format), and your hopes for the Eagles’ first NCAA tournament appearance in 8 years.
