EMU signs a quarterback!
With a commitment yesterday from Trotwood-Madison (near Dayton, Ohio) quarterback Michael Simpson, Ron English filled the one gaping hole in his 2012 recruiting class. Ohio’s 2011 Division II Offensive Player of the Year, Simpson isn’t rated by Rivals, and Scout rates him as a two-star recruit, the #136 quarterback in the class of 2012.
Simpson is a very athletic quarterback, and he got some interest from larger programs that wanted to move him to linebacker or safety. He wanted to stay at quarterback after leading Trotwood-Madison to a 2011 state championship, and he chose EMU over offers from Northern Illinois and Eastern Kentucky (FCS).
From what I can find out about him, Michael Simpson has a strong arm, a technically sound throwing motion, and is quick on his feet. Although Rivals lists him as a dual-threat quarterback, my sense is that he’s really a passer with the ability to scramble to keep plays alive. According to Trotwood-Madison coach Maurice Douglass, “He’s got what they call a live arm. He can make all the throws. His ability to throw the ball on the move is one of the things that will help him at the next level.” The biggest knock on him that I can find is poor decision-making, such as forcing passes into coverage. Although he played his senior year at Trotwood-Madison, before that he was at Chaminade Julienne High School.
With this addition, EMU’s depth list at quarterback will probably be as follows:
- Alex Gillett, senior, expected starter
- Tyler Benz, third-year sophomore
- Mark Iannotti, second-year freshman
- Michael Simpson, freshman, possible redshirt year
- Michael Mioduszewski, freshman preferred walk-on
