Murphy to Remain at Eastern

August 17, 2012

After a few days of uncertainty we have a basketball coach, and it is Rob Murphy.  Obviously, this is the best solution for all.  As the dust settles, there are still a lot of unanswered questions, and it will take a little time for Murphy to rebuild trust with the EMU community.  This can be accomplished in a very clear manner: winning.  Maybe that is wrong but I guarantee if the Eagles soar to success this season this little dalliance will be forgiven.

As I stated, however, the questions remain.  Why now?  Why leave a head coaching position in a D-I program for a scouting gig?  Murphy’s career track has been in college, and Jim Boeheim isn’t going to be at Syracuse forever.  It is not unreasonable to think that if the timing works out and Murphy continues to perform well at Eastern, he could take over the Syracuse program when Boeheim retires.  If not ‘Cuse, then any number of major D-I programs would be willing to hire him if he wins here at Eastern.  Now, however, there is one problem.  Would you want to be the AD who hires the guy who almost bolted from his job two weeks before the start of the fall semester?  I know winning cures all ills but this episode won’t be forgotten.

It makes you wonder if AD Derrick Gragg laid down the law to Murphy.  Stay for one more season or we will pursue the buyout and any other legal remedies available to us.  One thing is true, and it is that Murphy just made his work here at Eastern that much more challenging.  Recruiting just became more difficult, flaking out on your players is sure to be noticed by fellow MAC coaches.

Maybe the exit is coming next year at what is considered an appropriate time.  I honestly don’t know and won’t speculate on that.  We will just have to see how things play out.

The only way to describe this whole affair is that it has been really weird.  Coach Murphy will have to explain himself a little further at some point, but for now I think we can breathe a sigh of relief and get on with the season.  The only positive note is that now Murphy almost HAS to win.  If the program takes a step back, greener pastures may not be waiting for him.  He should be plenty motivated to get the Green and White to the top of the MAC.

Strangest thing I’ve seen in a long time. WTH was he thinking? First off, this is not a cellar dweller team he is coaching, he has the talent to be really good and secondly, he was leaving to be a scout? A scout? A scout?!!!!

    Dear Bobby Wicks,
It was good to see that you are still alive, and well I hope. I would agree with you entirely about Coach Murphy, and can’t understand people who always think the grass is greener, somewhere else.
His contract was displayed on the website, and I was amazed at all of the possible bonuses he could get, and did get, in his first year. So, with all of that, if he is truly successful at Eastern, he could be well into the 300,000 to 400,000 dollar category. Not bad for the MAC.

Thanks Kenneth, always good to read your thoughts–I’m not a mindreader, you know what I mean. I don’t know how he could have thought the grass was greener as a scout making less money, traveling all over hell, and removing himself from the coaching profession. He must know that a winning MAC coach is highly coveted by big programs, we just saw that with Ohio U’s John Groce. He has one incredibly successful season and Illinois came in and probably tripled his salary. Sounds like Murphy was making a power play to get more money out of Eastern and it blew up in his face. I think he’s damaged his chances of moving up the ladder now. Deserting your team 2 weeks before fall semester will not soon be forgotten by potential suitors if he indeed has a successful season, which I think he will.

Murphy has zero credibility, who will ever believe anything he says now? He’s with EMU not because he wants to because he didn’t have 210k

Beware of those who want to gloss over the harm Murphy’s little stunt caused the EMU basketball program.

If Murphy wants to be a scout so bad maybe there’s a job opening with the next wagon train.
