EMU v Illinois State open thread

September 8, 2012

Game day!

We’ve looked at EMU’s depth chart. We’ve looked at Illinois State the school, and Illinois State the team. Since it’s the home opener, we’ve also had a refresher about the Rynearson Stadium rules.

Now it’s just time to sit back and enjoy get to Rynearson Stadium and stand up and scream as loud as you can! The weather forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with just a 10% chance of rain so there should be no chance of a repeat of last year’s delayed home opener. You may want to dress a little warm (for early September), because the temperatures will be rising from about 60 degrees morning to only about 70 by the end of the game, and it’s going to be breezy with winds at 15 to 25 mph. Today is going to feel more like an early fall day than late summer.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:06 Eastern — call it 1 — but make sure to get into Rynearson early to watch the band’s pregame show and enjoy the beauty of their new uniforms NOW WITH MOAR HURON! Off the top of my head I think they start about 15-18 minutes before kickoff, but I’d try to be inside by at least 12:45 just to be safe.

If you’re stuck at work, out of town, or otherwise can’t make it to the game, it will be broadcast online by the MAC (we need a name for these broadcasts, suggestions include MACTV, MAC Vision, CineMAC, MACescope, and MACtube), as well as the usual WEMU 89.1 FM radio broadcast, also streamed online. Or if you’re not just “working” but really working and can’t run video or audio, here’s EMU’s live stats page. Since it’s an FCS opponent, I’m having trouble finding a betting line, but Sagarin’s ratings (not reliable at this point in the season because teams are not “well-connected”, but pretty much the only thing we’ve got to go on) suggest that the Redbirds should be favored by about 1.5 points. Really.

    Dear cmadler,
This is very embarrassing. All the talk starting again about kicking Eastern out of the MAC.
I have now sat through the first two games, and this team, and some of the coaches should be relived of their duties immediately. It will not do any good to keep those starters in the next game, when most of them play like it is the first game they ever played. Eastern will certainly lose their next two games, and I shudder to think what will be the score of the Michigan State game. Once that happens complacency sets in and the season is lost. Actually, I think it is. We, have nothing to lose, but games, by filling most of the starters with freshmen and sophomores. At least they will be getting game experience for next year. This has been very distressing.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote, though not all; I’m not ready to throw in the towel on this season quite yet, and I do think 5-7, and maybe even 6-6, could — maybe, with much improvement and a little luck — still be within reach.

The team looked terrible. How many interceptions were thrown? Three? The run game looked like crap and the passing game didn’t look any better. The run game was supposed to be our strength this year. And you will notice a trend in the pictures I send you…the Redbird running plays look almost exactly the same. And the penalties? There were alot of stupid penalties to be had and this was the second game of the season, I thought some of that would have been worked out.

That being said, I’m not ready to strike the colors just yet. There were some glimmers of hope during the game. I think if the team can shake some of the cobwebs out, they might have a shot.
